It was a fearless predator that hunted incredibly quickly and could eat large sharks, and would even eat its own kind if it could not find other prey.

Along with its skeleton, only half-digested fish fossils were discovered.

For this reason, scientists believe that Dunkleosteus did not chew very well and swallowed its prey in large pieces.

It is named after paleontologist David Dunkle.

The word "osteos" means "bone" in Greek. Instead of teeth, Dunkleosteus had long, sharp bony plates in its powerful jaw.
