Some inventions come out of laboratories. This one came out of a pocket knife. Mario Moretti Polegato was walking through the Nevada desert in 1992, feet burning, and without overthinking it, cut slits into his soles for air. That small act of impatience became three years of research, a patented membrane, and eventually a brand that forced an entire industry to answer a question it had been avoiding for decades: why should feet suffer when the fix is right there underfoot?
